Bristol City holds tight at 2nd to get automatic promotion

Posted by Martyn

The last day of the football leagues (Not Prem) was a tight rollercoaster. In our league Bristol City needed 3 points as Blackpool and Forest were close on our heels to clinch 2nd place and automatic promotion. In league 2 Bristol Rovers needed to win to keep themselves in the playoff places for a chance to go up into League one and they did that just 4 minutes from time.

My day started off at 1:20 outside a very packed Ship and Castle with City and Rotherham fans all standing drinking Natch and Carlsberg cheering on their teams and friendly banter. They were all such a nice lot and my mate Mark got chatty with some of them while I was listening to the Man Utd game on the radio. 2.40 and we were walking over to the ground, Man Utd had just one and the sun was still shinning. Everyone was given flags and people were buying Bristol City Promotion flags which I thought was a bit premature.
It was very tense knowing that this game was a must win game that would send us into Championship football next season and even though the stands were deafening and we were all over Rotherham I always thought that there was a chance we would slip up. Thank god for David Noble, the guy was a saint all the way through, we were 2-0 up at half time and won the game comfortably 3-1 sending us up and as soon as the final whistle went you know there was pitch invasion.

I did go down after a couple of minutes and tried to find my friend Kate but I could not hear her on the phone and finding her seemed an impossible task. I stayed as the players and manager made there speeches to the crowd and went back to the local pub to gloat to the Rovers fans.
