Well today I took the time off work to travel to Chippingham to go check out the only Golf that sounded any good. The price tag was a whooping £9,000 but as the VW garage had just sold one exactly the same for £11,500 it was cheap because of the low mileage. I took my dad’s friend who also happens to be a Mechanic, this turned out to be a good thing as he picked out things that I would not of seen. The car itself was very nice, 5 door, black with no scratches, the guy pointed out a couple of things that they would sort before handing over the car. The windscreen needed replacing and there where a couple of dents that he said they would sort out.
Thing is we also found that break disks and pads where all worn, a cord on the parcel shelf was missing, and it needed a service. With all that in mind he was still going to drop the price to £8,750 like he told us. But I was worried about the Timing belt, even though the car had not done 60,000 miles it was getting close to 5 years old and when it comes to ware and tear the timing belt is not one of those things you would wait to get replaced.
“For those who don’t know the timing belt (Cam belt) costs about £10 but the price is in the labour as they have to take out most of the engine to replace it and that’s what stings you for about £350 - £400 but if it snaps while driving it takes out all your cams and cold be a costly £800+ to fix”. So he said that if I pay the price of the car which was £250 more he would get that done as well. So basically I am having £600 ish work done on it for £250.
Anyway, I have to wait until a week Saturday before I can pick up the car. I took it for a spin and it is one of the smoothest cars I have driven, I would of never thought that in a diesel. It is also quick ;)
